Why It Matters

Numerology Built for Two

Most numerology wedding advice looks at the date alone. It tells you that 11/11 is powerful, or that a date reducing to 6 means love and family. That’s useful, and our special wedding dates guide covers it. But a marriage isn’t one number. It’s two people, each with a Life Path number drawn from their birth date, and a third number that belongs to the relationship itself.

This guide is the numerology counterpart to our zodiac compatibility guide for couples. It shows you how to calculate both of your Life Path numbers, what the pairing says about you as a couple, how to find your shared Union Number, and how to choose a 2027 wedding date that carries it. Every date is already calculated. You just have to find your number.

Step One

Calculate Both Life Path Numbers

1

Write out your full birth date

Use digits for the month, day, and four-digit year. March 14, 1991 becomes 0-3-1-4-1-9-9-1.

2

Add every digit together

0 + 3 + 1 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 28.

3

Keep reducing to a single digit

2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. That's a Life Path 1. If you hit 11, 22, or 33 along the way, stop there. Those are master numbers and stay unreduced.

4

Repeat for your partner

August 27, 1993: 0 + 8 + 2 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 39, then 3 + 9 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3. A Life Path 3.

Step Two

Find Your Life Path Family

Traditional numerology sorts the nine numbers into three families that share a temperament. Where you each land says a lot about how you'll move through a marriage together.

1 · 5 · 7

The independent thinkers. Self-directed, curious, and protective of their freedom. Two people from this family give each other room to grow — and rarely feel smothered.

2 · 4 · 8

The practical builders. Loyal, grounded, and focused on security. A same-family pair here builds a home, a plan, and a future with very little friction.

3 · 6 · 9

The heart-led creatives. Expressive, warm, and people-focused. Two of these share an emotional language and a love of celebrating life out loud.

What about master numbers?

For compatibility, a Life Path 11 is usually read with the 2 family and a 22 with the 4 family, since those are the numbers they reduce to. Both carry a heightened, more intense version of that energy.

Cross-Family Pairs

Pairings That Complement — and Pairs That Take Intention

Same family

Natural Ease

You Speak the Same Language

A 2 and an 8, a 3 and a 9, a 5 and a 7: you share instincts about freedom, security, or expression, so everyday decisions come easily. The thing to watch is doubling down on a shared blind spot.

Builder + creative

Complementary

Structure Meets Warmth

A 4 with a 6, an 8 with a 3. One partner builds the foundation and the other fills it with life. This is one of the most traditionally stable cross-family combinations.

Thinker + creative

Complementary

Depth Meets Joy

A 7 with a 3, a 1 with a 9. One brings focus and depth, the other brings lightness and connection. You broaden each other's worlds.

1 + 1 · 1 + 8

Takes Intention

Two Leaders

Two strong-willed numbers can make a formidable team or compete for the wheel. Couples here do best dividing up clear areas of ownership.

4 + 5

Takes Intention

Roots vs. Wings

The 4 wants a plan. The 5 wants to see where the road goes. It's a classic push-pull that works beautifully once you both value what the other brings, often through a wedding that balances both, like a planned elopement.

Step Three

Your Union Number, and What It Means

Add your two Life Path numbers together and reduce. Our example couple, a 1 and a 3, has a Union Number of 4. This is the number of the relationship itself.

Union 1

Two trailblazers. A partnership that keeps both identities strong. Suits a bold, just-the-two-of-you desert elopement.

Union 2

True partnership. Tenderness, diplomacy, and devotion. Suits a quiet, intimate ceremony on the Eldorado dry lakebed.

Union 3

Joy and expression. A social, playful couple. Suits a characterful celebration at Nelson Ghost Town.

Union 4

A solid foundation. Stability, loyalty, a home built together. Suits the timeless red rock of Valley of Fire.

Union 5

Adventure. Travel, change, and momentum. The most natural Vegas-elopement number there is. Suits a Valley of Fire helicopter wedding.

Union 6

Love and family. The most traditionally “married” number: nurturing, loyal, home-centered. Suits a ceremony with family at Valley of Fire.

Union 7

Depth and devotion. A private, spiritual bond. Suits a remote, silent-desert ceremony at Area 51.

Union 8

The power couple. Ambition, abundance, and shared success. Suits a skyline ceremony on a Strip helicopter flight.

Union 9

The big picture. Generous, compassionate, worldly. Suits something grand, like a Grand Canyon wedding.

Union 11

Inspired connection. A master number of intuition and deep recognition, the “we just knew” couple. Also carries the energy of 2.

Union 22

The master builders. A shared vision big enough to build a life around. Also carries the energy of 4.

Why 4 is so rare in 2027

The digits of 2027 add up to 11, so a date only reduces to a plain 4 when its month and day digits add to 2 or 20. That happens on just a handful of dates all year: 1/1, 1/10, 10/1, 10/10, and 9/29. Dates whose month and day add to 11 land on 22 first, and master numbers stay unreduced. That makes the true 4 dates scarce and the 22 dates plentiful. For a Union 4 couple, the 22 dates are the natural pick: the same foundation energy, amplified.

Choosing

Three Ways to Use Your Numbers

1

Match your Union Number

The most popular approach. The date carries the energy of the relationship itself. Our 1 + 3 example couple, with a Union 4, would look at Friday, October 1, or one of the 22 Saturdays.

2

Choose from the family you share

If you're both in the same family, any number from it works. Two builders might choose a 2, 4, or 8 date. It's a good fallback when your exact Union Number has no open date.

3

Bridge your two families

Cross-family couples sometimes pick a date from the family neither of them belongs to, a third energy that belongs to the marriage. A 1 (thinker) and a 4 (builder) might marry on a 6 date, the number of love and family.

4

Then check the calendar

Every date above already skips Mercury retrograde. For eclipse windows and Venus timing, cross-check our best wedding dates guide and the 2027 Mercury retrograde dates.

Keep It in Perspective

A Lens, Not a Rulebook

Life Path numbers are a way to talk about who you each are and what you want your marriage to feel like. They aren’t a compatibility test you can fail. The couples who get the most out of numerology treat it like a conversation starter: we’re both builders, so let’s pick a foundation date, or our Union 5 says adventure, so let’s elope by helicopter.

If you’d like to layer on more meaning, pair your numbers with your signs in our zodiac compatibility guide, look for a repeating angel number date, or use the moon phase method. Whatever number you land on, Nevada lets you marry on it with no waiting period.

Common Questions

Life Path Compatibility FAQ

How do I calculate my Life Path number?
Write your full birth date as digits, add every digit together, and keep adding the digits of the result until you reach a single number from 1 to 9. For March 14, 1991: 0+3+1+4+1+9+9+1 = 28, then 2+8 = 10, then 1+0 = 1 — a Life Path 1. If you land on 11, 22, or 33 along the way, stop: those are master numbers and are traditionally left unreduced.
What is a Union Number in numerology?
Your Union Number — also called a relationship or compatibility number — is the sum of both partners' Life Path numbers, reduced to a single digit (or a master number). A Life Path 1 and a Life Path 3 have a Union Number of 4. It describes the energy of the relationship itself rather than either person in it, which is why it's the number couples usually match their wedding date to.
Which Life Path numbers are most compatible?
Traditional numerology groups the numbers into three families that share a temperament: 1, 5, and 7 (independent thinkers), 2, 4, and 8 (practical builders), and 3, 6, and 9 (creative, heart-led). Numbers in the same family tend to understand each other easily. Cross-family pairs aren't incompatible — they often complement each other — they just have more to learn from one another.
What if our Life Path numbers aren't compatible?
Numerology describes tendencies, not verdicts. Pairs that are often called challenging — two strong 1s, or a structure-loving 4 with a freedom-loving 5 — usually just need more deliberate communication. Many couples use a wedding date as a balancing number: a 2 or 6 date for harmony, or your Union Number to put the relationship's own energy front and center.
Should our wedding date match our Union Number?
It's the most popular approach, but not the only one. You can match the date to your Union Number, choose a date number from the family you share, or pick a date that bridges your two families. All three are legitimate — choose the one whose meaning you'd like to carry into the marriage.
How do you calculate the numerology of a wedding date?
The same way as a Life Path: add every digit of the full date and reduce. September 18, 2027 is 9+1+8+2+0+2+7 = 29, then 2+9 = 11 — a master-number date. Every date in the tables on this page has already been calculated for you.
Are there any 2027 dates that reduce to 33?
No. In 2027 the year's digits alone add to 11, and no month-and-day combination can bring the total to 33. The master numbers available in 2027 are 11 and 22.
